“And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it.”
-Roald Dahl

There is magic stirring in the deep places
while sweaty heads sleep
and grown brows furrow

In a twinkling
up is turned down
in is flipped out

And love spills warm and gentle
into the cracks
hewn from worry

For this magic
that is unseen
It has a force
all its own

And no manner of flailing
or gnashing of teeth
No turning away
or arms crossed defiant

Can turn it away
or disfigure its
joy tinged face
with angst and vexing

No, it has come
this magic

And all we must ever do
is hear the whisper
from down deep
that says

I believe.

  1. oh, friend. you heard it -- you heard that whisper from down deep, which is always where the words for this place come from.
lovely stirrings here. stirrings that are a force all their own.

  2. And Kelli, this was the second thing I wrote today. The first piece (for another place) was the one that broke open the floodgates and that was inspired by your sharing. Thank you for being such a champion for me. I can't tell you how very much it moves and shapes me. Thank you.

  3. I needed this today, your words of what is down deep. I so often fail to believe. I so often call out to God "Lord, I believe but help me in my unbelief."

  4. Holly, this beauty from pain, responding to the whisper from down deep, this is exquisite, and I love that Dahl quote, too. I appreciate the way you mine the depths for the gold. Not over speaking it, but trusting us to hear you. And I do. This line especially moved me today, for how I've known this:

And love spills warm and gentle into the cracks hewn from worry

Amazing how belief isn't contingent and yet it is built on those moments of knowing worry and fear cracks being filled with perfect love.

    Thank you, friend.

  5. Magic, deeper and stronger than all gnashing and flailing. Yes, this is what this world--what I need. This is what has come. Beautiful, Holly. Truly.

  6. Thank you, Jennifer, for being here.

  7. Ashley, you are such an encouragement to me, every time! And I love that you always seem to "get" me, even, sometimes, when I don't see it all myself. Your presence here is such a gift, friend. Always.

  8. Thank you, Nancy. Thank you so much.

  9. you have managed to capture the very ESSENCE of faith in this exquisite piece of poetry, friend. thank you. and i LOVE the photo too. it's always such a gift, coming here, holly.

  10. Thank you so very much, emily.

  11. You aren't a poet in "disguise!" :) I've been feeling so comforted by your spirit lately. Gosh, I'm so grateful for the powerful voices, such as yours, guiding me & consoling me throughout my day, everyday. It's like wherever I am, I'm always present in this community of saviours, you're all by my side, never leaving me to feel alone in my despair and joys in life. You are one of those saviours I imagine. What strength I get from this vision!

  12. Jane, your words are so very generous.Thank you! And to think that any words that I share in this space might comfort or encourage you? That brings such joy to my heart. I am grateful for your presence here and welcome your voice, anytime. Again, thank you so very much.

  13. You have such a gift. Your words made me feel way down deep in my heart and soul. Thank you for all you give.
